Greetings,

I am new to SSRS.  I am simply needing to preview the report and I keep getting the following error.

An error occurred during local report processing.
The size necessary to buffer the XML content exceeded the buffer quota.

You guidance is greatly appreciated.

As far as I understand it, that error hides the actual problem.  Do you get any other errors in the Error List window?  If yes, solve those and the message you've been seeing should be gone too.

Also, the bug report mentioned by dannygonzalez09 contains a workaround which may be interesting to look at.
