In Mac Top right corner there is an icon like this:
. ___
.__
.___

when i click on it, it slides the main window left and shows  a pane in the right.
I want to know what 's that for? what is it supposed to display on that right pane? last access items (I doubt it)

Any idea?

Thanks

it is the Notification Center, a new feature in OS X since Mountain Lion. it "provides you with an elegant and unified view of new stuff that pops up on your Mac, and you can access it from anywhere at any time."

see below the official KB.
