Issue with drawables

Hi all,
I have an interesting dilemma here. The application I'm maintaining has resources for drawables-mdpi and drawables-ldpi but I've noticed, through a quick check on the apk, that also versions of the hdpi and xhdpi icons are packaged. Don't really understand why, but maybe that another question. So in order to shrink the apk size we use aapt to remove the hdpi and xhdpi resources from the apk.
However, at a certain point a new device, with a higher resolution, think hdpi, had to be supported. As expected  app does not start and crashes continuously.
My question  is : Is there a way that I can check my apk free of the higher resolution images and make Android simply expand the present lower resolution images ?

Regards,
r
