I have upgraded various times from vista to win 7 to win 8 thus maintaining the graphics driver BUT I recently upgraded to win 8.1 and its wiped the display adaptor driver. I have seen sites where they give a modded inf so as to use the nvidia drivers but havnt been able to find anyway to force the nvidia driver to install.

any ideas as to how to proceed now (apart from buying a new laptop)

i never follow the update route - always do a fresh install
you you can try the windows 7 driver :  http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8400M.html
here they also have a solution :

I tried the sevenforums but it never installed. I have set the vaio to factory condition then upgraded to win 7 and the driver is still preserved. If I now update to win 8 will it retain the nvidia driver or will win 8 decide to use the microsoft driver?

>>  but it never installed  <<  what never installed?  what exactly did you do?
and wgat do you mean with "the driver is still preserved"? not sure if i understand you correct
if you upgrade, there's no way you can tell which driver it will use - only if you install it manually

sevenforums wanted me to download a vista driver and then amend the inf I tried that but unsurprisingly the nvidia setup ran but win 8 retained the microsoft driver. In light of not knowing whjat will happen if i now upgrade to win 8 i will have to leave it at win 7.

ok. but if there is no driver for the OS, i think in most case W8 will use the W7 driver
