Line-In Windows 8 Probs

I think this is a popular problem, but Windows 8 sees the Mic 3.5 jack input as Line-In (Microphone says 'Unplugged') and consequently the input volume drops off the scale.
Its an old desktop Dell for what that's worth.
I've uninstalled the sound card drivers/gone to Dell's site and got their 'Update Drivers' app, etc etc, but nothing.

Windows 8 sees the Mic 3.5 jack input as Line-In (Microphone says 'Unplugged') .... Its an old desktop Dell for what that's worth

I wonder if this is an incompatibility with Windows 8 and an older system.

(a) I will look around some more.

(b) Any chance on trying a different sound card in the machine (newer card)?
