Hi , we are looking to build a website to sell our products, customers will pay online using a debit credit card.

We are looking at 3rd part companies who provide payment gateway services ie paypal etc

What I would like to know is from a integration into our to be built website what specific questions do i need to know to forward on to whoever might build our website.

And what questions do I need to know the answers to to ensure we dont choose a vendor which would then make it difficult to integrate into our web site

Instead of looking for a payment gateway, you start with your merchant processor.  They will either give you a list of gateways you can use or they will only allow one.  Some banks are going to the route of being their own gateway now. One of the larger gateway's is authorize.net.

Let's say you start with some_bank that uses xyz gateway.  Next year, another_bank gives you better rates and they use abc gateway.  If coded properly,  the switch from one gateway to another should be minimal.

One of the choices you will want to make is if you want make your own custom system or using something already created.  This will depend on your product.  Most already created options have the different major gateway coding built in.

I have answered a lot of of e-commerce questions here that are worth reading up on.
