I have a google apps email account setup in mac mail.
using imap to sync mail with all devices.
It works fine for sending & recieving all mails expect when i try to reply to a group??
I always get "cannot send message using the server gmail"
i have tried deleting all smtp references in the keychain.
deleting & re creating the account in mac mail.
have tried using the isp smtp settings instead of smtp.gmail.com
have googled to death!! but there doesnt seem to be any solution?
i also tried it in outlook for mac 2011 but had the same issue.
maybe someone here has heard of this issue?

When you say a group do you mean one that you have created on your computer in your Address Book or a group in Gmail?

It looks like the limits are described in this link:

How many people are you trying to send to at once?

It's a group of 8 people.
I haven't setup a group in my contacts.
I'm just trying to reply to them!

Well then you are not reaching those limits. If you expand the group does it show any recipients? I used to use Mac Mail but have since moved to just using the web interface for Gmail.

The only thing I think of is that OSX and Mail aren't handling the groups very well and you can see some similar issues and fixes in this thread that might be helpful:
