File Upload - File Exists

I'm curious in this part of my PHP upload script.  If the filename exists I don't want it to just fail I want it to append something to the name or change the filename etc... so that the file will still upload.

if (file_exists("upload/" . $_FILES["file"]["name"][$qNum]))
                        {
                            echo $_FILES["file"]["name"][$qNum] . " already exists. ";
                        }
                        else
                        {
                            move_uploaded_file($_FILES["file"]["tmp_name"][$qNum],
                                "upload/" . $_FILES["file"]["name"][$qNum]);
                            echo "Stored in: " . "upload/" . $_FILES["file"]["name"][$qNum];

                            $sql11="update survey_questions set media = ".$media;
                            $db->query($sql11);
                        }

This script shows how to do an upload, check for an existing file and avoid overwriting unless the client requests it.  It makes a backup, if possible.

Ah yes, that's a good idea.  So if the file exists I just append the date/time to my filename and then move.  Thanks!
