I don't know what the proper terms are for what I am looking for.  Perhaps someone could start by enlightening me on that.  But basically, I am looking for screen capturing software that also allows you to do an overlay or picture within the Video capture using a web cam.  That is, I want to demo what I am doing on screen but also have a small window that shows me talking directly to the camera.  And, I am looking to do this for free?  Don't want much do I?

Actually I have found software that appears to do what I want, but there is a free version and a $200.00 version.  I don't know, but I suspect that only the $200.00 version allows for doing the live webcam capability I mentioned.  The software is Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Screen Capture.  Does anyone know if the free version will allow for the functionality I'm looking for?

If not, is there other free software, that actually works, and does offer that capability?  What is that capability called?

Woodrow,

Hello again! In our thread back in Aug-Sep, I recommended the free, open source CamStudio:

http://camstudio.org/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/

In that thread, you said that you did not need picture-in-picture, so I didn't mention it. But CamStudio does support putting your webcam in a picture-in-picture. Note this comment from their website:

CamStudio can also add high-quality, anti-aliased (no jagged edges) screen captions to your recordings in seconds and with the unique Video Annotation feature you can even personalise your videos by including a webcam movie of yourself "picture-in-picture" over your desktop.

Hello Joe.  Thanks for responding.

Yes, I remember the thread.  I downloaded CamStudio and left myself good notes on it.  In part they say the following

"I had high hopes for CamStudio but after jumping through all the hoops, the file it created for a 2 minute and 40 second video was so big, it took 20 minutes to upload to Youtube, and then it didn’t upload correctly."

I do, however, read good reviews for Expression Encoder.  The question is whether the free version of Expression Encoder does picture in picture.

Did you try the suggestions in the previous thread to reduce the file size:

Re Expression Encoder, I've never used it, so can't help you based on personal experience. All I can do is look at the web, which yielded this comment about the Free version:
Up to 10 minutes of screen capture
So unless 10 minutes is adequate, the Free version won't work for you. Re picture-in-picture, it's not even clear if the Pro version can do it. Here's a page that talks about Free vs. Pro, and it doesn't mention picture-in-picture as a feature in either one:

OK, well, I'm glad to say I have found a solution that works well for me.  Somehow I stumbled across a piece of software called Now you see me.  It is a small little program that allows you to superimpose whatever your webcam is looking at on top of whatever software you're using to do video Screen capture.  In my case, the software I like best is FastStone capture (Faststone is free).  "Now you see me" is free also.  It should work equally well in combination with other screen capturing software.  The links that led me to it follow:

Now you see me software:
