iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod [Touch 5g] “Dark Matter”
“iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod [Touch 5g] “Dark Matter”. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory Settings.”
Clicked OK:
“The software required for communication with the iPod is not installed correctly, and you must manually eject the iPod before each disconnect. Please reinstall iTunes [11] to install the iPod’s software.”
Clicked OK:
iPod Touch [iOS 7.0.4] is under devices. ‘Restore iPod…’ is only option.
I assume ‘factory settings’ means all Apps/Music etc deleted. I have current iTunes backup of Dark Matter, but not listed. iPod Touch seems to work OK except for empty playlists which started this process.
1. How to reinstall iTunes 11 [http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/?]?
2. How to restore iPod Touch from backup? Maybe no if 1. true?
3. If 1 is no-go Can I copy Apps from iTunes to Dark Matter? iTunes Music OK. All else [Notes, Contacts] in iCloud
This all started when iTunes 11 / OSX Mavericks booted and iTunes would not start and had to use power down reboot.

The plot thickens...Even More...
So now it works! ITunes 11 recognizes the iPod Touch 'Dark Matter' and its contents.
What did I do? Nothing, Nada, Zip, Zero, Zilch.
Well, I did backup the iPod contents (Music & Photos) with Syncios to PC; earlier backup still in PC iTunes 11.
For me, the jury is still out. I need to see if I can restore few playlist contents.
I'll check in later...

All is well. I rebuilt the playlists from iTunes 11 with MacMini and everything seems to work OK with iPod Touch 5g. Thanks to you and the magic of Mavericks and iTunes.
Great! I'm glad to hear you problems are behind you!

How about Apps - still there from other ios devices?

The plot thickens,,,
iTunes is not the problem. I was able to update 2 iPhones (5s & 4s [used as iPod]) with no difficulty.
Same issue with iTunes on WIN 7 Pro PC - this is where copy of iTunes music is. 95% of this music is copies of my CDs/Tapes.
Yes, I do have copy of music library on PC. Also have MacBook Pro (circa 2011) that I will use for reformatting iPod 5g, as I use the MacBook for experimenting anyway. Then restore music from PC.
Sound OK?
Folks complain about Windows, but OSX can be troublesome at times. This and other minor issues began after upgrading to Mavericks. I am most comfortable with windows - I use WIN 7 Pro and 8.1. iOS is another matter altogether.
