SQL Server 2012 Management Studio not Opening Connection Window

I have SQL Server 2012 Express installed. I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and there were no problems - even after updates were applied. This weekend, a number of security patches have been installed (not to SQL) and now, when I open SQL Server Management Studio, the open connection window does not open and the management studio screen is unresponsive (as though a modal window is open somewhere but it is nowhere to be seen). I can open the profiler and that can open a connection window so I think it is something in Management Studio itself.

I have tried going through SQL installation to just remove the management studio and re-install it but the tick box that is checked next to management tools is disabled - preventing me from uninstalling.

Any guidance would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Another snippet of information. If I use flags to connect to my local server, the management studio works fine. If I click connect to connect to another server, the unresponsiveness returns... and now I have fund the problem!!..

For some reason, the open connection window was completely off my screen and not visible. After launching Management Studio, I pressed Alt Space and it showed the window menu for the connection window (which was modal for the management studio). I could select move and use the arrow keys to bring it back to a screen.

Thanks - already installed SP1. The problem was with attaching a monitor. For some reason, the management studio opened the connection window in modal mode but placed it completely off all screens (and no window in the taskbar). I found it by accident by pressing alt - space then I could drag it back onto a screen using key presses.
