Steps to move a WordPress site from one server to another?

Hi friends.

I need to move a WordPress site.

I am assuming I can just use phpMyAdmin to export the MYSQL tables to a .sql file, then move the .sql file and import it into the new database.

And then of course I would point the domain name to the correct nameservers, and install WordPress.

However, I am not sure of the order in which I should complete these steps.

Should I move the MYSQL tables first? Or will the WordPress installation overwrite the tables anyway?

I am think steps should be:

1) point domain to correct nameservers

2) set up new WordPress installation

3) move over MYSQL tables

May I have your advice, please?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Eric,

Your are mostly correct but there are a few details you missed.  I wrote an article that applies:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web_Development/Blogs/WordPress/A_10258-How-To-Move-A-WordPress-Site.html

Read that and let me know if you have any questions.  You will need to check the SQL dump for path changes and you also want to bring over the wp-content folder to migrate images, the see, and plugins.

Otherwise, your steps are correct.
