The back up job started failing with the following error:
Final error: 0xe0001904 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.  Writer Name: Exchange Server, Writer ID: {xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}, Last error: The VSS Writer failed, but the operation can be retried (0x800423f3), State: Failed during prepare snapshot operation (8).
I checked all of the writers on the exchange server and they are all reporting stable..
Not sure what to check now..

I solved the issue by just rebooting the exchange server and then the backup worked just fine...

you would be just as quick restarting the BE Remote Agent service, usually enough to sort things.....;)
