Filemaker - Portal - Layered Edit boxes, Becaoming See-Through

I have I hope a simple but strange issue happening.
I have a portal with a hidden edit field underneath that is a button to a value list drop down.  This holds the ID.  Ontop of that I have another edit (nont editable) field showing the related friendly name.
The top button has a solid white background therefore preventing the ID number underneath from showing.
This works fine on other pages.  On this one however (no special conditional work going on etc), it becomes see through once you unfocus from a record.  See attached example (sorry I cant show you more).

I have checked all the states of the top text box, and it is solid whote throughout.  Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong.

Anything you can advise I check in properties?

I can't really tell much from your screen shot, but there is actually a better way to do this: you can use the ID field itself for the menu, though I think you will need to use a pop-up menu rather than a drop-down list.

Select the ID field, make it editable, set it to pop-up menu, and then in the edit value list dialog, set it to use the ID field in the left column and then the "friendly name" in the right column (you'll need to check "Also display values from second field").  Then, in the options below, check "Show values only from second field". You can also choose which field to sort the displayed values by.

This allows you to display the "friendly name" only for easy selection purposes, but to actually be changing the ID associated with the "friendly name". No hidden field required and less work to set it up or maintain it.

Are you saying that the original edit field would show the friendly name and not the ID even though it is an ID field?

Did you mean make the friendly (related) name popup the menu?

Proplem with the popups is that I dont know how to stop all the top menu/toolbars appearing.

Is this genuinly a better way or just an alternative way?  I prefer to be sure before I commit to a big change for something I thought was a few clicks away.

Thanks so far.

Yes. The popup is assigned to the ID field and only shows the friendly name.

For the purposes of testing, add another instance of the ID field to the layout somewhere. Then create an alternate Value List as I described with both the ID and the friendly name and set to only display the "second value". The assign it to the test field and see how it works.

I don't understand what this means. Whether the Status Area are the top is visible or not is  a totally separate setting which you can script if you want, or Lock as well.

Assuming I understand what you're looking for without actually looking at the file, yes, this is the better way, not just an alternative. It's what the "second value" option was designed for. Create a test field - or even a test layout - along with the alternate value list and see how it works. Should only take a few minutes to setup.
