One of my client's users is running XP on a old Lenovo desktop using a french USB azerty keyboard.<br />
<br />
I installed Thunderbird on her PC last week and now when she hits the caret (^) key the computer screen prints double carets (^^) - whatever the active application<br />
<br />
The normal result would be that the computer displays nothing but awaits the following character upon which to apply the caret, what is known in french as the 'circonflex' accent.<br />
<br />
If I 'shift' this same key I obtain double 'trema' accents (two dots)<br />
<br />
I loaded the virtual keyboard layout (accessibility accessories) and the caret again, when selected, appears twice on the screen<br />
<br />
I booted in safemode and the same key works as expected, without producing the double caret.<br />
<br />
Apparently this is the only key that produces this behaviour<br />
<br />

XP azerty layout prints two characters

A desktop computer is a personal computer designed for use at a single location due to its size and power requirements, usually by one person. The most common configuration has a case that houses the power supply, motherboard, disk storage (usually one or more hard disk drives and optical disc drives); a keyboard and mouse for input; and computer monitor and printer for output. The case may be oriented horizontally and placed atop a desk or vertically and placed underneath or beside a desk.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
