I have developed a Mainform with subforms. All is working except an auto-fill into a field that is not being recognized.

I have attached a zipped fill with snap shots and the database.

Can you explain where I went wrong placing commands?

You help will be greatly appreciated.

OH, the info is in the PDFS?  You probably need to put the question in the Experts Exchange thread too so that when answered, it will be searchable on the EE system.

Sudonim,

"You probably need to put the question in the Experts Exchange thread too so that when answered, it will be searchable on the EE system."
I do not understand.  If I am not now in the "thread".  How do it get to the "thread"?

in tbl_01_BS you have a field MS_PS_ID which is actually a text 25.

the data you are trying to link this on is a text field from combossettID which is the PS_ID from tAasset field PS_ID is 255

The data you are trying to link on cannot fit in the MS_PS_ID field...

The copy you posted has a relationship on the field so you will need to delete the relationship, amend the field value to match, then re-add the relationship.

ok, you have actualy put the details of your question and the problem in the PDF's in the zip.  the details of the question should be here, in text, in the EE comments, so that future users can find the problem and look at the solution.

the 2nd part of the problem, MS_PS_ID in tbl_06_PC has the same problem.. it is a text field with field size 25... not 255

and finally, as you are naming these "ID" you could do this by defining a number  for the different types, and storing that in the tables for the subforms... rather than duplicating the whole long test string description.

e.g. ID: 1, PD_Desc:Chelsea Raw Water Pump Station, etc

then store the 1 in the ID field as a number, rather the de-normalised current way recording the same text value in lots of tables.

Sudonium,

Thanks for continuing to work with me.

"you could do this by defining a number  for the different types,"

As I understand this, the ID number would then be in a one-to-one relationship with the "different types" both of which will be unique.  Is this preferred to having a single text field as primary key?

yes thats how i'd do it.  an ID to me is a number, reprenting a description etc.

try my solution for the text fields first though and see if you get your version working....

I assume you would have to make quite a lot of changes to amend this Database based on the current fields changing into numeric ID's.

The issue was text field size.  Thanks.

I am considering the norm of making the primary key autonumber.  You are correct about the work.

It is likely this database structure will be used as a template in the future.  Therefore, it seems wise to proceed with the upgrade.

Thanks for your help.
