Laptop repair

Customer brought in Dell laptop Model PP39I with the power button not working.  The power button is in the hinge of the monitor.  Does the monitor have to be replaced to fix the power button?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Probably. The button just makes a contact (which is buried underneath the button) and the button is not removable.

If the laptop is under warranty or less than two years old, it is probably worth repairing.

If the laptop is 3 years old or more, it is probably not worth fixing. Look on eBay to see if you can find a lid or a carcass that you could transplant your motherboard and hard drive into.
