MacMail, Specify Location of Mail Store

The mail store for Macmail is located in the users\library\mail folder.

Can I configure Macmail so that the mail store is somewhere else?  I know I can create a symbolic link so that Macmail thinks it is finding the mail store in users\library\mail folder but actually accessing it in another location.

But I don't want to do that.  I want Macmail to actually look for and access the mail store in a different location.  I know I can do this in Outlook but can I do this in Macmail?

No .. you cannot change this within Mac Mail but you COULD edit the Mail Preferences plist file.
Creating a symlink is the simplest option but if you REALLY want to do this .....

!! WARNING - this is not a supported feature of Mac Mail and you do this at your own risk!!

It is possible to change the default location for mail boxes, but only on a per mailbox basis. To do this you need to have XCode so you have the Property List Editor or a 3rd party Plist editor application.

First copy/backup the "com.apple.mail.plist" file located in ~/Library/Preferences folder
Also make sure Mac Mail is NOT running.

Edit the "com.apple.mail.plist" in a Plist Editor.

In the list of items, go down the list to Mail accounts. Expand it and then you can see where to change the default location for each mail box (one entry listed per account created).  Save and re-open Mac Mail (if you've ensured that the mailbox folders are in the new location).

Also check that file & folder ownership permissions are correct on the mailbox folders in the new location.
