Sound stopped working. How can I get it back?

The sound suddenly stopped working on my kids' computer. I confirmed the speakers were working by plugging them into another device. I plugged other headphones into all the available jacks in the computer and none of them produced a sound.

Computer is running windows 8.1.
The sound (volume) icon indicates that the sound is on the maximum volume. I went to task manager and did not see any errors anywhere, including the sound section.

I haven't a clue what to do next.

Do you have any suggestions to get the sound working again?

Is your driver working?

Try updating your sound driver.

Try your PC manufacturer's website for updated driver for Windows 8.1?

Make sure the Windows audio service is running.

Press the Windows + R keys at the same time.
Type "Services.msc" in the dialog box
Look for the Windows Audio service in the list (sorted alphabetically)
Make sure its status is "running".

Thank you. I tried removing all sound devices/drivers, rebooted, and windows put them back. Then the sound worked.

Go figure.

I appreciate the time and effort you spent to send me the suggestions above.
