Large Excel file on 2008 Server R2 very slow to open from XP computers

Hello Experts,

We have had to replace an old Linux server with a newer machine running 2008 Server R2.

One large Excel file is very slow to open from the three computers running XP but opens fine from a computer running Windows 8.

This did not occur with the old Linux server and makes me think the sharing protocols have been optimised for the newer operating systems.

Everyone group has Full Control. Computers have not been joined to the domain as yet and we hope to avoid that if possible to save creating new profiles.

Is there anything we can change on the server to improve the speed for the XP machines ?

thanks

One of the stock Windoze updates was the Office File Validation Tool which is known to cause major grief opening Excel files.  You don't say what version of Office is running; but, here is a registry file to merge for Officce 2003 to disable it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Security\FileValidation]
"EnableOnLoad"=dword:00000000
