That's a really broad subject.  Power supplies range in size from microwatts to megawatts depending on the job that they're made for.  The most important topic in power supply design is efficiency because whether the original power source is a battery or the AC wall, wasted power in the form of heat is undesireable.

increase in wattage + the development of smaller PSU's maybe, and how they can be more efficient with the two of those factors...
