I have just been assigned to manage an aix bladecenter, and there is a requirement to build out virtual lpars on several of the blades.

I am looking for resources to study up on the process, as well as what software is required to do so

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

Hi,

Power Virtualization is already built into the firmware of your blades.
You'll need a PowerVM license to use it, however.
The license consists of a key which you can get from here (once your systems' serial numbers are entitled, that is): http://www-912.ibm.com/pod/pod and a DVD.
If you cannot get the key please contact your IBM Sales Rep.

The relevant DVD should be labelled "IBM PowerVM / VIO Server" or the like.
You can also download the software from IBM's Entitled Software Support "ESS" (http://www-304.ibm.com/servers/eserver/ess/index.wss?lnk=msdDO-enss-usen) if you don't have the DVD (again, only when you're entitled to use PowerVM).

Please note that due to the lacking HMC support you cannot run a pure Virtual I/O "VIO" server on a blade, you must install the Integrated Virtualization Manager "IVM" which is a combination of Hardware Management Console "HMC" and VIOS functionality. But don't worry, the installer will notice that there is no HMC and will configure IVM automatically.

OK, IBM are currently building HMC support into the blades and blade support into the HMC "firmware", but I, personally, find this solution a bit too "fresh" to use it unhesitatingly.

IBM have an exhausting  PowerVM landing page:
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/virtualization/resources.html

There are videos, Redbooks, White Papers etc, and there are links to the PowerVM community pages.

This should be your book to start with:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247940.html?Open

Here is the Blade Center Infocenter:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/bladectr/documentation/index.jsp

Every AIX Infocenter has a part dealing with virtualization ("partitioning"), e.g. AIX 7.1:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/aix/v7r1/index.jsp
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/aix/v7r1/topic/com.ibm.aix.install/doc/insgdrf/partitioning.htm

If you need more info or links, please let me know!
