If you are using Cisco platform, Cisco has provided a number of tools in the IOS that can be used for scripting, scheduling and automation, e.g. TCL shell scripting tool, Kron scheduling and EEM.

(1) TCL Shell

(2) Kron scheduling

You can use the kron schedule to automate the script, i.e. if you need the script to run at a particular time on a particular frequency.

(3) EEM (Embedded Event manager)

If you want to do something when certain events happen, then Cisco EEM is a good tool.
