Windows 7 - How to expand folders to see all subfolders

How can I expand the current folder view so that I can see all of the subfolders underneath?
err
I vaguely remember a keyboard shortcut involving the plus sign

Are you saying just left clicking on the folder does not open it and display subfolders?
