adding the active directory role to windows 2012 server

I just installed the windows 2012 standard server to my box and would like to add the active directory role.  The existing domain that I joined contains only one windows 2000 server.  Would I have any problems if I activate active directory on the windows 2012 server and then make the 2012 server primary.  My plan is to take the 2000 server offline.

Any advice?

If the 2000 server is a domain controller, then yes there will be problems. Attempting to make the 2012 server a DC will actually fail because 2000 is too old to properly replicate.

You will need to add a server that supports 2000, but that 2000 also supports, to facilitate the transition. So something like 2008 R2. Make it a DC. Retire the 2000 server. Raise all functional levels to 2003/2008. Then make 2012 a DC and retire the intermediate server.
