Is there an easy way to get started with 3-D printing?

A group of people want to get together and chip in to buy a super birthday gift for "the man who has everything"

We would like to get him a 3-D printer.

Big question:  are there software starter kits, and some sort of library of objects that could be easily printed?  I doubt if he's going to want to learn CAD just to enjoy this.

Thanks.
