Do I need a mailbox for an e-mail enabled distribution group?

I have recently taken over from the IT Manager and been asked to give access to HR the recruitment e-mail.  The e-mail in question is tied to a distribution group but there is no mailbox set up for it.  There are no members in this group at the moment.

Can I assume that without any mailbox and the fact that AD is not running on the exchange server, this group actually doesn't work or do anything?  I am assuming it was at some point directing e-mails to somebodies inbox.

I think I just need to remove the e-mail address from it and set up a mailbox in Exchange instead.

Some clarification please.

Thanks

Thanks very much.  You gave me my answer that all I had to do was add the recipient(s) to the group.
