Laptop Recommendation

Looking for a recommendation for a laptop or similar to run RealFlight Remote Control model airplane simulator.  The optimal system requirements are:

Dual Core 2.4GHz CPU
2 GB RAM
3D Accelerated Video with: 512 MB dedicated video memory (minimum is 32 MB).

The graphics would seem to be the most demanding requirement,

What would you suggest.

Thanks.

A Lenovo T440p has an NVidia Graphics adapter (which is a powerful adapter), up to 16Gb of memory, 64-bit, Windows 7 or 8.

I use Lenovo X230 with Intel Graphics, 8Gb of memory, 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and it does everything I need.

A "T" has a DVD writer built in; an "X" does not, but is smaller and lighter.

I currently had a Compaq CQ 60 with Windows 8.1 and 4 GB memory.  Don't know the pedigree of the graphics, but assuming it is not up to the task.

Look in Device Manager and then under Display Adapters. You will see the make of Video Adapter you have.

Also, 4Gb of operating memory is bare minimum today and can slow a machine down, so keep that in mind as well.

I think 4 GB is max for that model (old).  I would check the graphics adapter, but all if a sudden it doesn't want to boot up - no display.  I'll have to work on that.

You can try an external monitor from the VGA port. But since the laptop is old, check out the Lenovo T440p above.

Finally got it up; it was going through several cycles of updates.  The display is Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1).

You probably need a laptop with a more powerful video adapter than that and more memory overall.

Would it make sense or complicate the issue to have a touch screen model since it will likely have Windows 8?

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
With respect to touch screen, that really depends on you. I have Windows 8.1 and my computer does not have a touch screen. The way I use my computer, it does not matter. So I don't miss a touch screen. You might like one.

As an aside (still looking for a laptop), would the graphics on my desktop qualify as 3D accelerated.  IT has AMD Radeon HD 6530D Graphics?

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
That is a very good graphics adapter. I have not got that or used it myself, but it is quite good according to its specs.

In considering a tablet vs a laptop, how would the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 stack up for graphics capability?  See attached link:

http://tech2.in.com/features/tablets/microsoft-surface-pro-2-a-specifications-review/915628

Or is there a better tablet choice?

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
I do not use tablets or the Surface Pro. The Surface Pro 2 gets good reviews, but as noted, I have not used one.

Lenovo tablets are also quite decent.

BUT, Tablets use lower power CPU's and so in terms of resource heavy graphics, they probably are not as good as real computers.

Looked at a couple of laptops -

Lenovo U530-Touch-59385621

Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro

Both are touch screen and seem to have significant graphics.]

Also saw a Samsung laptop that seemed to have good specs (NP8802E-X01UB; AMD Raedon HD 8770M with 1 GB dedicated memory), but unsure of reliability and reputation of Samsung computers (I like my Samsung Galaxy 3S phone).

I know you're partial to Lenovo, but would like your opinion.

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
The Samsung seems to have strong graphics, but otherwise I have not used Samsung.

The Lenovo machines look fine as well. They are more consumer focused than the "T" or "X" models I use. But then my graphics needs are less than yours.

So any of these should work, but just review the specs carefully.
