We have 500.000 visitors / month to our website portfolio of 20 websites from both the EU and US and hosted our websites at various hosting providers (both US and EU). We are looking to centralize this more, but we need to have a good uptime and a fast load time when visiting from the US and EU.

How can we create a solution with load balancing to have fast load times from both the US and the EU?

We would like to have a solution that is both
Cost-effective
Good and reliable

And: how does DNS load balancing work exactly?

You could use opensource load balancer! I have used this for IIS loadbalanceing

for the meaning of DNS load balancing, you can probably guess from it's name that it does load balancing using the DNS as a solution ... here's more extensive explanation about it.
