Backup Exec 2010 R2 failing with A failure occurred querying the Writer status

Backup of a SBS2008 server is failing with the error :

e000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status. I have attached the error log.

It does mention that the Symantec Backup Exec Active Directory Recovery Agent is not installed. These backups have worked in the past so not sure why I need this agent. I have also see forum posts suggesting this can be ignored.

cmd: "vssadmin list writers" shows the following issues:

errors.txt

I have rebooted the server and this did not help.

Any suggestions?

uninstall it and use the built in SBS backup.

I've seen writers problems before just like this.  For us, we use Microsoft support to resolve the issue because we could not find a long term fix. If you restart the server and check the writers, they should be fine after a restart, but then some event will probably cause it to fail again. We tried Symantec support and they mentioned it was a Windows problem, nit a BE problem.

Windows Server Backup may be the best solution.  You can try Microsoft or find a tech that is very experienced in working with writer problems.

OK thanks for the comments. I have now upgraded to BE 2010 R3.

Strangely the backup taken the night before I upgraded completed successfully.

Last night  was the first attempt after the upgrade. This time it has failed with a completely different error. Fortunately its a problem Symantec is aware of, so I have implemented the suggested work around.

Will see how it goes tonight.

That's good news.  The upgrade to 2013 probably included an update that resolved the writer problem.  You might want to run a test backup on a few folders during the day to see if that works properly.

Upgrading seems to have resolved all the backup issues now. It is completing successfully every night.

I kind of fixed this one myself with no particular expert posting a solution as such. Thanks for the comments anyway guys.
