There are several ways to get data from MySQL to Excel.
The mysql command line tool can generate tab-delimited output. You can redirect that to a file, then open it with Excel.
Use the "MySQL for Excel" plugin - http://www.mysql.com/why-mysql/windows/excel/
Install MyODBC and use Excel's ability to pull data from any ODBC source.
MySQL has a CSV storage engine. The CSV files it creates can be opened and edited directly with Excel.

Going the other way, from Excel to MySQL, can use some of the same mechanisms. But you usually have to set up the table in MySQL first, and make sure that your Excel data is in a form that matches the data types of the MySQL table.
