DataStore error when I try to add

I have an ESXi 4.1 host that I have just built.  It has 6 one TB drives.  I have configured the array to have two arrays, running Raid 5 using 3 drives each.  This provides for 2  1.8 TB Logical Drives.

When I added the first logical drive, everything went as normal and the 1.8 TB datastore was created.  When I attempted to add the second logical drive, I get the following error.

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryVmfsDatastoreCreateOptions" for object "datastoreSystem-143135" on vCenter Server "*****.********.com" failed.

I have removed the logical drive, removed the array and then added it back and still get the same error.

Are these virgin, disk drives with no information on them? e.g. they've not been previosuly used in a server?

also, for testing if you reduce the array sizes to 1TB, can you create the datastores?

These were not virgin drives.  But I did delete the array configuration and rebuilt the configuration.  Also originally there were three logical drives.

When I create the new arrays the first time, I created 3 (1) TB logical Drives.  It allowed me to create the first 1TB datastore, but I got the error above when I tried to create the other two.  So then I decided since I am only using this local storage for backup date (no VM's), I would just create one large logical drive.

The Storage Adapter could see the logical drive, but when I tried to add the storage it was available.  I guessed that it was because the size was over 2TB.

So back to the ACU and that is when I created the (2) 1.8TB logical drives.

But back to seeing both, but only able to add one.

There is the 2TB limit to be aware of on ESXi 4.1.

When you create the 2nd data store on the second LUN it does not show and old partitions.

The error is common because it cannot remove the old partition information before creating the vmfs partition.
