Why are these transceivers removable?  I worked with other brands of switches and have never encountered removable transceivers.  What are the advantages?

For example if you needed to connect to Fiber as your transport medium, there are many different types of fiber optic transmission styles and different physical connection types and strand types.. With removable transceivers, you can choose the model that fits your needs and snap it in for a few hundred dollars and go. The alternative is a fixed interface which only works with the specific media it was designed for. In this case you replace the whole router or switch if your media type changes, at a cost of thousands of dollars.

Of course there are many other types of transceivers out there for many other media connections which makes the concept a more universal option for an expensive piece of gear.
