Exchange 2010 retry status in smarthost queue high

we have 4 exchange servers and all are delivering with the exception of one having trouble and delivering slowly. On the other exchange servers the delivery type smart hosts is at 0 but we have one server that where the status is at retry now is up to 100 messages in this queue. It eventually delivers the mail outbound via the external hosts which is our anti-spam hygiene server but sits on the queue for a long time.
I have been watching the queue since yesterday but it has gotten progressively worse. There are still some emails from a particuliar domain with the last error 418.104.22.168 too many errors and another message from that same domain saying 422.214.171.124 could not resolve. My first question is any harm in removing these messages since they have been in the queue the longest or do I have another issue altogether.
