Best Analytics to Embed in Pages

Our web host offers Urchin Advanced webstats - a bit of Javascript code we should put at the top of our pages to provide detailed webstats.

TWO QUESTIONS
In your experience does Urchin Advanced webstats provide quality results?  Is there a better one you all would recommend, free to mid-priced.

The documentation tells us to put the code as the first thing on the page.  Even above the <html><head>.  Is that workable?

Thanks,

OT

I think Urchin was discontinued along time ago.  Use either http://www.google.com/analytics/ if you want a hosted solution or a free open source solution you install on your server http://piwik.org/

A good paid solution if you are on windows http://www.smartertools.com/smarterstats/web-analytics-seo-software.aspx

There is a difference between stats on your site and something like google analytics.  The stats on your site will probably be higher but they show what is requested vs google analytic shows what is served.  I use both.
