Hi Experts,

I have some VOIP background but never used Asterisk. I want to setup and configure Asterisk to gain some hands on experience.  Can anyone advice me where to start ?

Thanks,

To install Asterisk, you may want to get directly to this page:

http://blogs.digium.com/2012/11/05/how-to-install-asterisk-11-on-centos-6/

My recommendation would be to use CentOS or Scientific Linux, which are Redhat based and very stable and powerful for server management.

Here is a simplified guide to install Asterisk I just compiled a few days ago:

yum install gcc gcc-c++ wget kernel-devel libxml2-devel ncurses-devel sqlite-devel

cd /usr/src/
wget http://downloads.asterisk.org/pub/telephony/asterisk/asterisk-11-current.tar.gz
tar zxvf asterisk*
cd /usr/src/asterisk*
If running a 32 bits system:
./configure && make menuselect && make && make install
If running a 64 bits system:
./configure --libdir=/usr/lib64 && make menuselect && make && make install
make samples
make config
service asterisk start
chkconfig asterisk on

This is a very good place to obtain details about the operation and stuff:

https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/Getting+Started

Get a hold of the Asterisk Definitive Guide as well to be able to have a well outlined PBX configuration to start with.
