Cool Edit Pro and Windows 8 - Install Problem

I have a copy of Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and 2.1 with a registration key that I have been using for years (probably since around 1998 or so) which I have re-installed across several computers as they have come and gone, mainly through wearing out/crashing for good!

I am currently running the same program on a Dell Inspiron 530 on XP Pro with no problems, and am trying to install it on the new Lenovo desktop I bought which is running Windows 8.1.

The program seems to install O.K. but I am getting two error messages :

1) File missing:  WMVcore2.dll
2) Registration already used.

In the case of problem # 1, I searched online and found that other users had the same problem which was successfully solved by copying WMVcore.dll and then pasting it back but changing the name to WMVcore2.dll. Tried it, but it did not work. The machine just did not see the newly renamed file in the same directory.

In the case of problem # 2, I've never received this error in the course of  moving the program across computers, even with one copy on my desktop and another on my laptop.

Note that the firm (Syntrillium) that originated Cool Edit sold out to Adobe years ago, and Adobe dropped all support as it wanted Cool Edit to create Audition.

Anyone encounter these problems and have solutions?

ASKER

Viki,

Thanks for responding. My system is 64, I log in as Administrator, and I did try to install and run it in compatibility mode, but no luck all the way around.

Interesting: I uninstalled the program, made sure the folders were all removed, and when I tried to reinstall it, it did get as far as the 21-day trial and showed 20 days left, since I started this task yesterday. Is there something else that needs to be found and deleted?

Viki, thanks for all the thinking you put in on this. I was able to use Total Uninstall 3 (current version is 6, but 3 worked just fine, amazingly) to do the initial scan to "see" installed programs, and discovered that I had installed TWO versions of Cool Edit in separate folders somehow, different names. I deleted one, then went to uninstall the other but found that the program was working perfectly as it should! I'm guessing that compatibility mode kicked in somehow and automatically did whatever is supposed to happen to validate the user name and registration number! As long as it's now working, I will leave it alone and run with it.
I am glad that I could help.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
