hyper-v virtual switch manager error

In a lab environment, I get an error in a new installation of Windows 2012 Hyper-v.
When I go into virtual switch manager, I get "An error occurred while trying to retrieve a list of virtual switches." The operation on local computer failed.

I'm wondering if this is because my windows 2012 which has a hyper-v host is running as a vm on top of VMWare esxi 5 (because I don't have many pc's to experiment with)?   Or is there something else I could try?

Thank you

Those two hypervisor cannot coexist. Hyper-V must run on bare metal, not in a VM of another virtualization product.
