Google's algorithm will tend to put the more famous and reputed towards the top and the lesser known and less reputed at the bottom of the results although that does not always mean the best are at the top and worst at the bottom.   Your own detailed research on each subject is required.  The more you research that subject, the more you will understand it.  One search does not make you an authority.  Once you find a result, research that result and drill down.

Unless you have access to each sites logs (and you don't) you have to do your research and make your own best judgments.  Every site that claims to help show what traffic is on another site or what a keyword trend is will have flaws.  It does not matter what that flaw is, what matters is  you keep comparing/benchmarking against the same thing.  If you like using Alexa, keep using that in your comparisons.  But don't compare Site A with Alexa and Site B with Quantcast.

The more you do this and compare how your own sites rank, you will get a good feeling for what you are looking for.  There are not hard and fast answers.
