Top Navigation Menu Items in Joomla 3.2

I'm trying to add a top navigation menu to be part of all the pages in our joomla site. Can someone guide give instructions for this. I performed what is at the following sites

http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/joomla-3/menu/horizontal-menu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hSbyZBBf6A

but it does not seem to work plus they are using a different version of joomla. I'd like to do this without having to install additional plugins and extensions. Thank you.

a brief overview assuming you know your way around Joomla...
it can depend on the what template you have active.
assume you have installed Joomla with the default template Protostar
A template will have positions defined. basically, you have to define a menu with items which can be articles, blog or components, then define a menu module to tell joomla where to display the menu items.

e.g.:

the top menu position is usually "position-1"
so the steps for a simple menu are:
1) define and write several articles  say home, about and contact  (in article manager)
2) define a menu in the menu manager say 'top menu' (in menu manager - 'New' , give it a title and type -i.e.  "top menu" "top menu" and save and close) - click on 'top menu' and add navigation items by pressing  'New',  then  give it a title say 'home' then select menu type  "single article" then select one of the articles say 'home'   save and close.
do this for all the menu items you want.
3) now you have defined a menu you now need a module to display that menu in a certain position.
go to  Module Manager -   press 'new' give it a title 'top menu'
position - enter 'position-1'
under basic options  'select menu' and choose the menu you defined.
under 'menu assignment'  make sure you have select that the menu appears on all menus
check everything above is 'published'
save,
now if you have a cache then you may either wait or clear the cache to see the changes.
