When I move my lightning bolt around my sheet, I suddenly get long black lines extending past the the page boundries (see graphic).
What is this for?
What is this called?

Those lines are there to help you! They appear when the axis of the lightning bolt is at a multiple of 45 degrees.

Scott:
I thought this was the case but sometimes I'm seeing it snap at odd decimals close to the 45 degree markers  134.9563, rather than 135.  44.97 rather than 45.

Any idea why this is happening?
