Domain required in front of user 2012 R2 ??

Certain logons like our ftp site etc seem to only work when we use the format:

OURDOMAIN\ftpuser

ftpuser  will not work?

On our 2008 R2 server using the username worked fine.
I realize when logging on a workstation or profile this has been required for some time... just wondering about other services??

In authentication of FTP site go to basic authentication and right click edit and add your domain as default domain and then check if only username is working in FTP authentication on 2012 R2 server.
