System image recovery to Hyper-V VM using differencing disks

I have a lot of large VMs using fixed size disks that I'd like to restore onto a child VM that uses a differencing disk, the parent of which uses the same OS as the VM I'm trying to restore. Unfortunately because the disks are different I get a 0x80042412 error when trying a system image recovery restore.

Is there any way to use Windows system image recovery or something similar to restore a backup of the large VM into one that uses differencing disks and which should store the same data much more efficiently?

No, it’s not possible. The differencing VHD contains only the differences from the parent disk and the link between them is hardcoded in the diff VHD file.
