Hi

I have a website www.johannesburgguesthouses.com that I have had up for a number of years but even though the domain name is good, it still doesn't get much traffic. What can I do to improve the performance of such a site. I have been told that a lot more content would help

I have some extensive write ups http:Q_28330259.html#a39755212 and I will repeat this http:Q_28201608.html#a39374636

The concept is simple.   Have great content and well formed code.  Any other tricks and shortcuts you have heard about, throw out the window.

1) Make sure your code is valid http://validator.w3.org

2) Have a lot of great content that is not copy pasted from someplace else.  Your content should be created to make the reader want to be engaged rather then chasing "seo"

3) You should have your "local" taken care of.  Google+, Bing local should be up to date as well as any professional business listings

4) Content

5) Content

6) Use webmaster tools https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en

7) Avoid "seo tricks" or anything else that seem like a shortcut.

A good example of having a lot of content in a handful of categories that are cross referenced with each other.  http://www.compendium.com/blog/

Good compelling content that makes you want to read more and submit your email to get good information http://www.hubspot.com/

A spammy looking site that is not inviting or worth reading http://seo-indexer.suggestsoft.com/

With regards to your site specifically, the site does not have any written content and it has many coding errorrs http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.johannesburgguesthouses.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0 although it looks like the reason the error count is so high is because you probably have a repeating area.  Proper html coding and semantics does play a roll, but just fixing that is a tiny piece of the puzzle.

Location/local is also very important. It was very hard to tell where your guest houses are until I read NESLSON MANDELAS HOME is 1.5 KM away.  Make sure you have an address, phone or some type of physical location as that will get picked up.   Notice http://www.johannesburg-guesthouses.co.za/accommodation/guesthouse/lizatlancaster.html but on your site, clicking on a link goes to outside your domain http://www.nightsbridge.co.za/bridge/TravelBook?action=bb&bbid=14636&nbday=12&nbmonth=01&nbyear=2014&nonights=1&nbid=420

Notice all the content on http://www.johannesburg-guesthouses.co.za/

Are you in google local/google plus and bing local?

Get your site design upgraded to the point people will want to use you as a reference. Right now your site looks like a highschool project.  Unless you have some pretty fantastic deals, people may not take the site seriously.

Another possible issue is duplicate content.  You have http://www.gautrainhotel.com/Guesthouses.aspx with the same info.   I don't know the area at all, but I saw Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Sandton Johannesburg If you are trying to piggy back on that name, if google just "blu gautrain", the site does not show up on the first two pages.

To summarize for you specifically:

1) Get the look of your site upgraded significantly

2) Make sure your site is coded properly

3) Add content about the area, but don't copy and paste from somebody else.

4) Add location info to your listing

5) The detail of your listings should stay on your own site and not go to nightsbridge.  I can see you use them for booking, but you can have the details on your own site, then the booking link  that goes to nightsbridge.

6) Add to your site on a regular basis.  At least weekly with new content and images and perhaps a calendar.

7) Search out other sites that may want to use you as a reference and ask to link back to yours.  You don't need many, just a one or two key sites.  Avoid paying for links for seo. (not talking about pay per click).

Good Luck!
