edge transport

I am quite new to exchange and have been doing some research on the various server roles. Looking at roles on some diagrams I received on our exchange setup, it seems we only run hub, cas and mailbox. No edge transport? edge transport seems to be the permiter role, so i wondered is it common for an environment to not operate a edge transport server, and if so does an additional 3rd party tool typically do the role that the edge transport server would?

None of the implementations I have ever done used the Edge role. Edge as far as I am concerned is a waste of money. There are a lot better solutions with more functionality and cost less than a Windows and Exchange licence. Therefore it is very common to have no Edge server, and either have email deliver direct, or come in via a third party tool or appliance.

can you provide some details on main players/software providers that replace edge and have more functionality etc.

can hub role do any sort of security scans on incoming mail (i.e. block spam, certain attachments etc)..

Pretty much take your choice. Appliances - Barracuda etc. Applications, most AV vendors have an SMTP gateway function, GFI Mail Essentials etc.

Hub transport can do basic anti spam, it isn't enabled by default - see the documentation on TechNet for that.
