Hi,

I am looking into IPAM and i have watched some training videos online.  On the training videos, they specify that option 81 has to be set on DHCP when implementing IPAM.

I am looking at technet etc and i cannot find a requirement to say actually say this?

The option 81 is actually DHCPv4 option that DHCP clients use to indicate that they give the DHCP server the permission to register their FQDN in DNS on their behalf.

There is an excellent article on TechNet that explains the mechanisms in DHCP: Using DNS servers with DHCP

IPAM is used for monitoring, management and auditing not only address space and DHCP servers but also DNS servers. That is why is good to have an option 81 set. If it's not, the whole IPAM idea makes no sense because it would not update client DNS records automatically.
