Are there any specific errors that come up when the user attempts to use this function? Also check in the event viewer for any extra information.

the most common error message is "word couldn't send mail because of MAPI failure: unspecificied error".  occasionally it says that there is no default email client.

there's nothing in the event viewer that i can determine is related previously although today there was a new error: "Application or service 'Microsoft Office Document Cache' could not be shut down."
