asked on

install of wordpress plugin open street maps

From the dashboard I selected the plugin, however, when i try to install it asks for ftp credentials for my site so I am unsure how to proceed.

I want to create a map of the world that can be linked to a small db of mine that shows where ex-pats went from my home town.

help would be appreciated.

Its a simple wordpress site so not sure why it wants ftp.

Because it needs some way of copying the files to your server.

Most shared servers use something like suPHP, which allow scripts to run as their owners, which greatly simplifies installs in Joomla, Wordpress etc

In your case, your Wordpress installation decided you don't have that kind of setup, so it needs your ftp details to upload files to your server.

Depending on your host, best way would be to ask them to install the plugin for you. It will possibly be free, included in your maintenance contract.

I have my own synology server DS411+ so I am hosting on my own. So what should I do in this case?
Give your wordpress install the details for a ftp user that has rights for the wordpress folder.
If you do not want to use an admin account, create one specially for this.
My wordpress user has full myphpadmin user rights but i couldnt see anywhere in myphpadmin to give ftp rights. If I sign into my synology as admin and look at ftp tab it looks like the service is enabled.

at present the site is hanging off a directory called www/Doverkey/ should I move the site to for example DoverKey User? then add the rights as you mentioned? What I am unsure about is when its redirected to the synology by no-ip it goes straight to the wp_doverkey user login. and not via a synology user.

I am new at this so apologies in advance
Don't move the site.
create a user (like doverFTP),  give doverFTP user full rights, including ftp, to www folder.
ok I will give that a go!
I had a look and have a user called DoverKey I set user rights and ftp is as your photo.
the domain is doverkey.no-ip.org but it fails still with cannot connect to ftp server.

have attached ftp screen.

I noted that the synology current copnnections didnt record any activity
