trouble with variable names in libreoffice calc

I cannot give my variables sensible names because I don't understand what is confusing LO.

I think this is related to your other question here.  If these are the same, here is what I think is going on.  It looks like you have database ranges and sheet ranges mixed up together.  Notice here in database ranges that you have several ranges (from the menu Data >> Define Range)

Now if you look at your named ranges, you will see another list:
Selecting Named RangesNotice in this list that some items have the #REF! error:
Your Named RangesThe named ranges are what you want to be set correctly for the way you are using them in formulas.  Update those values here and your sheet will work better.

I don't know anything about databases so it was a mistake they are designated that way.
