Android stopped notify on text messages

For some reason the phone stopped showing notifications (vibrate, sound).  The text message symbol pops up quietly.
Tried to Clear Data in messaging, force stop, disable/enable Show Notifications, reboot phone.  No luck.
Any ideas?

Same.  Vibrates but no sound.  Default sound enabled.

So, some progress. You have vibrations.

The call alert works? Trying to see if it's a sound problem or a notification problem.

Can you try to change the default sound in handcent? Maybe with something you uploaded? There is a remote possibility that the default sounds are corrupted.
